Playing Sustainably with a Handmade Teddy Bear

In today’s modern age, it is becoming increasingly important to try being more eco-conscious when it comes to shopping, and a perfect time to consider the environment is when you are purchasing toys for your little ones. With Earth Day soon approaching on 22nd April, you may be thinking about some ways to shop more sustainably, and you will be pleased to know that the Grin & Bear teddies are designed to be loved and cherished for years to come. Moving towards eco-friendly toys is a great start for living a more sustainable lifestyle and a Grin & Bear handmade teddy bear would provide a perfect toy to support you in your sustainable choices.

The first ever Grin & Bear teddy

Our founder, Michael Dankwah, has always adored designing teddy bears and the business was founded with him creating a Christmas gift for his best friend, Wendy. This first teddy bear, Castanó was designed and created with love and Wendy recently gave it to her own daughter to play with, just showing how these toys can be passed down from generation to generation, and ever since the birth of this teddy bear design business, each subsequent teddy bear has been designed with the same care and dedication as the last.

Michael has also designed teddy bears for members of his own family too, including his beloved niece and nephew. They have never thrown away their teddy bears, and his niece frequently reads books to her growing teddy bear audience! This just shows how they can grow up with these treasured toys and pass them down to their own children in due course.

What materials do we use for the teddy bears?

Sustainability is something that we pride ourselves on as a business, operating a completely plastic-free process using high quality materials. As a few examples, some of our bestselling Liberty Collection bears - Cranford, Betsy and Tresco - are all designed using organic cotton. Organic cotton is one of the most environmentally friendly options, as it does not have a harsh manufacturing process and is grown without using synthetic chemicals or pesticides with low-impact farming methods.

We also have various bears in our Luxury Collection including our pink teddy bear, Willa, which are handmade using wool, a 100% natural, renewable and biodegradable material sourced from Abraham Moon; a manufacturer who sources its wool from sheep raised on sustainable farms and designs the wool in a sustainably managed British mill in the heart of Yorkshire.

As a family run business, Grin & Bear is always looking to use the finest materials and hand-picked fabrics to create teddy bears which are going to be loved for years to come, and not thrown away after one use.

The Grin & Bear delivery service

Before our teddy bears are shipped each one is carefully checked by Michael and packed in a delightful bespoke box made from recyclable materials – so that even unpacking your teddy bear gift is a lovely experience.
