It All Began with an Elephant Teddy Bear

World Elephant Day
is nearly upon us, which is an annual occasion that was launched in 2012 to bring attention to the urgent plight of Asian and African elephants.  World Elephant Day is always celebrated on August 12th and is a day which asks us to express our concern, share our knowledge and support solutions for the better care of captive and wild elephants alike.

Here at Grin & Bear, we always enjoy spreading awareness of important causes such as this, as elephants across the globe are in desperate need of protection due to the numerous threats they face from poaching, habitat loss and mis-treatment by humans. If you would like to celebrate World Elephant Day with Grin & Bear, we have a surprising story to share and a very special elephant teddy bear available which would be perfect to mark the occasion.

How the First Elephant Teddy Came About

Funnily enough, one of the biggest teddy bear brands in the world - Steiff teddy bears - started out with its founder Margarete Steiff designing stuffed elephant teddy bears. Margarete’s story is a classic one of triumph over adversity. At 18 months old a high fever left her paralysed in both legs and with pain in her right arm. However, undeterred, the cheerful Margarete was taken to school in a wheelbarrow and at 17 she completed her training as a seamstress working for her older sisters’ tailoring business before setting up on her own in a workshop built for her by her father in her parents’ home. A successful felt clothing business only gave way to stuffed toys when Margarete saw a pattern for a small stuffed elephant and decided to sell it as a pin cushion.

So, Margarete’s first ever stuffed animal creation in 1879 was an elephant, long before the traditional teddy bears became popular. When her younger brother started to sell the stuffed elephants successfully as children’s toys at a local market, the famous company was born. Although Margarete added other animals to her stuffed toy range, by far and away the best-selling product was the elephant teddy.

Teddy bears, in fact, were not a mainstream, popular toy until they were officially invented in 1902, when Theodore Roosevelt refused to kill a bear cub while on a hunting trip. The stuffed bear was also independently created around the same time in Germany by the Steiff company which began mass producing these plush toys and by 1907, almost one million teddy bears had been sold.

Grin & Bear’s First Elephant Teddy

Just like Margarete, over a hundred years before, Michael founded Grin & Bear in 2004 with the mission to bring joy to others through his stuffed teddy bear creations. With Michael’s fashion design background, he is able to source a variety of high-quality materials to create the most unique range of handmade teddy bears, each one with a distinct appearance and personality.  One of the first Grin & Bear teddy bear creations was designed using a delightful elephant themed, biscuit colour fabric with cute white elephants all over.

Ellie Teddy Bear’s First Owner

As there are so many unique teddy bears in the different collections, our customers can always find a Grin & Bear teddy which is perfect for the recipient whatever the age. Ellie teddy bear’s first owner was a lovely baby girl who was given the bear when she was a newborn. Her name is Eliza and they have been inseparable ever since, Ellie even accompanying her on her first day at nursery.

Ellie is the perfect memory bear for World Elephant Day

We think our best-selling Ellie is certainly the very best teddy bear for World Elephant Day. From our Classic teddy bear collection of handmade teddy bears, Ellie has been designed with a wonderful elephant design fabric in a lovely biscuit and white colour. Ellie is a teddy bear to remember forever, a true memory bear who you are bound to fall in love with. In celebration of World Elephant Day, Grin & Bear will donate 10% of all sales of Ellie this week to The World Elephant Society.
