Why Is Peter Rabbit So Popular?

With the imminent launch of Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway we wanted to talk about the origins of Peter Rabbit and why this mischievous rabbit character has such enduring appeal. Back in 1902, Beatrix Potter published the wonderful tale of Peter Rabbit, a whimsical story about a little bunny rabbit which soon sparked the creation of more tales about the adventures with his friends. Even over a hundred years on, Peter Rabbit has a special place in all of our hearts and is such a prominent part of children’s literature as one of the best-selling books of all time. But why do we love this blue jacketed bunny so much?

The origins of the Peter Rabbit story

The beloved bunny character was inspired by a pet rabbit from childhood, which Beatrix Potter named Peter Piper. The first story of Peter Rabbit ever told was originally written in 1893, as a story written to entertain the son of Beatrix Potter’s friend, 5-year-old Noel Moore, who was ill at the time. The story was sent as a letter which described four rabbits - Peter, Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail, and their mother, with accompanying sketches of the characters. Following on from this, the first drafts and illustrations were born, which then made it into the book that we love and cherish today.

Beatrix Potter’s stories have been in publication for such a long time, and with 45 million copies sold to date, this tale certainly struck a chord with people all over the world, and still continues to do so to this day. The stories are unique because they bridge the gap between generations, connecting grandchildren and great grandparents through literature, as they both appreciate and adore the story. The moral of the story that disobedience leads to trouble is narrated in such a gentle and endearing way that children absorb it without noticing. The Beatrix Potter books in general have such a profound effect on children who experience them over and over again in their early years. It is very rare for a children’s story to be so popular amongst different ages and families, which is what makes the entire franchise so special.

Peter Rabbit himself is a very mischievous and cheeky character who loves to have fun with his friends. It’s no wonder why children have resonated so much with the story and has helped them to develop a natural curiosity about the world around them. You can now find Peter Rabbit almost anywhere, and especially since the release of the Peter Rabbit movies, there are endless toys and merchandise which children love and will certainly remain a prominent part of future generations’ lives too.

Here at Grin & Bear, we love Peter Rabbit and this love for the character and franchise was definitely part of the inspiration to create our very own rabbit teddy bears. Beatrix Potter herself designed toys of the character back in 1903, using cotton fabric as the main structure and body, as well as brush bristles for his whiskers.
