Keeping their Memory Alive with Memory Bears

The loss of a loved one can seem impossible to come to terms with, and if it is the loss of your own child, often described as the unimaginable loss, it will feel that life is never going to be the same.

Tomorrow it is National Bereaved Parents Day, which takes place to raise awareness of all parents who have lost a child of any age. The loss of a child is absolutely devastating, and here at Grin & Bear, we want to help raise awareness of this heartbreaking event for any parent and show our support for the bereaved parent community.

This year, the theme of National Bereaved Parents Day is ‘Keeping Their Memory Alive’ and here at Grin & Bear, we think a wonderful way to do this is through a memory bear.

What is a memory bear?

A memory bear can be anything you want it to be, it is essentially a teddy bear that represents your loved one and can be treasured for years to come to keep their memory alive. Usually a memory bear is created from items of clothing which you associate with your loved one. Any items of clothes which you associate with the special person you are grieving can be used, whether it is a baby-grow, T shirt, scarf, buttoned shirt or uniform. A memory bear made out of loved one’s clothes is the perfect way to re-use and treasure special clothes you don’t want to part with.

This is often one of the most difficult stages of grief, as you try to cope with extremely difficult emotions, whilst still treasuring the memory of the special person you lost. A memory bear will provide a physical reminder of that person for you and your family to cherish forever and maintain a reassuring physical bond that can be a real comfort.

How Do We Create Memory Bears at Grin & Bear?

It always starts with a conversation with Michael, Grin & Bear’s founder. He can be trusted to listen with sensitivity and then use his teddy bear design skills to propose the best use of the treasured items to create a handmade memory bear that will truly encompass the loved one.  Here at Grin & Bear, we are privileged to have worked on many design projects for grieving loved ones. One of our most recent bereavement bear projects was for a group of 8 grandchildren, who had recently lost their grandfather. We have discussed this project before, but it has truly struck a chord with us, as these grandchildren were scattered across the globe; the US, Australia and New Zealand.

We worked closely with the dearly missed grandpa’s daughter-in-law to design 8 bears for the grandchildren using the fabric of their grandpa’s pyjamas and shirts. Michael’s final design had each of the 8 bears dressed in a dressing gown, the same design worn by their grandfather, topped off with a neck bow. Each bear was delivered to the grandchild in a sturdy box, wrapped in tissue paper; the perfect gift to keep the memory of this incredible grandfather alive.

How can Grin & Bear help you?

If you have lost a child, this must be absolutely heartbreaking, and if you are looking for a way to keep their memory alive, the Grin & Bear team can work with you to design a keepsake teddy bear that you can treasure forever. If you want, the bespoke design can be made out of your child’s clothes, which means you will never have to part with the treasured items or keep them shut away in a cupboard. Instead, you can hold onto them in the form of a teddy bear which may in time help you feel close to your precious child once again. A teddy bear like this would also be especially perfect for a grieving sibling, to help them feel closer to the brother or sister that they have had to say goodbye to.

If you would like to find out more about our bespoke memory bear projects, feel free to contact Michael and he will happily answer any questions you may have. Please complete the contact form on his website, and he will get back to you as soon as possible.
