Grin & Bear’s Bespoke Teddy Bear Project for The Royal Mint

Teddy bears have always been such a popular gift ever since they were invented over 120 years ago. So many people have an emotional attachment to these teddies, and it’s not surprising why. Your furry friends can be as bespoke as you want them to be, and here at Grin & Bear, we love creating gorgeous designs which we hope you will fall in love with.

The Royal Mint Project

Michael is the designer and founder of Grin & Bear, who started the business by designing and creating the ultimate Christmas gift for his best friend. Since then he hasn’t looked back and has designed numerous bespoke teddy bears for his clients, whether corporate or personal.

Back in December 2017, The Royal Mint recognised Michael’s exceptional ability to design these teddy bears and approached him to work on a collaboration. All of his products are designed with his customers in mind, with the finest materials and hand-picked fabrics, carefully selected according to each brief. The Royal Mint wanted a special bear which would represent the organisation’s social and economic progress, as well as the technological and scientific advances since its establishment all the way back in 1279 when the first coins were minted in the fortress-like Tower of London.

The Royal Mint is an incredibly prestigious organisation owned by the UK government, known as the world's leading export mint which is responsible for making coins and medals for an average of 60 countries every year. Sir Isaac Newton was Master of the Mint from 1699 until his death in 1727. He applied his scientific mind to the task of improving the accuracy and integrity of coins, working hard to prevent counterfeiting. As the world's leading export mint, The Royal Mint makes coins and medals for more countries than anyone else. Orders currently come in on a regular basis from countries all across the globe.

Going back to Michael’s initial meeting in 2017, there followed several meetings where designs and fabrics were discussed back and forth over many months. Unfortunately, the Royal Mint then had a change of heart as they were unsure whether the price point would work for their customer base. However, a year and a half later they happily came back and wanted to go ahead and work on a teddy bear collaboration for Christmas 2019. As with all Michael’s teddy bear projects, he wanted to design something that makes a wonderful commemorative gift, which someone is bound to treasure for years to come, much like the special edition Royal Mint coins.

Once the sample was approved, Michael ordered the fabric for production only to be told there was only enough fabric to make half the order! This was the most testing part of the whole process. The bears had already been pre-sold to their customers and the Royal Mint were expecting them before Christmas. Michael then had to race around London trying to locate more fabric and get it back to the workshop in time for the remaining bears to be made and delivered all in time for Christmas.

There were 100 Grin & Bear bears created for The Royal Mint, and they were called ‘Newton’, named after the organisation’s most famous former Governor, Sir Isaac Newton. Following his race around London in search of more fabric, Michael was able to get these completed and delivered 3 weeks before Christmas, with each bear being expertly hand-filled and stitched, crafted with a blended wool mix. All the Royal Mint “Newton” bears sold out within 24 hours, and due to this outstanding success, Michael is in the process of designing a new one for Christmas 2020 - which is almost guaranteed to follow in the successful footsteps of its predecessor.
