Christmas Ice Skating In London
I am not exactly Christopher Dean on ice. You will most likely find me flailing helplessly as I scramble to grab a hold of the nearest barrier to avoid falling flat on my back. This however, has never stopped me from enjoying the truly magical feel of an outdoor ice rink during the Christmas period in London.
Usually most of these rinks are set against a backdrop of some of the city's most recognisable attractions and are lit up like a jewel with lights and decorations which makes enduring the cold weather more festive. Below is a list of our favourite locations to enjoy a wonderful few hours of skating.
Natural History Museum
This really is the dream venue for an ice skating rink. The majestic backdrop of the museum, the line of trees adorned with fairy lights and a Christmas tree that towers over the rink all add up to make this experience an unforgettable one
Hyde Park Winter Wonderland
Hyde Park, in the lead up to Christmas is transformed into a winter wonderland with an array of attractions and activities to beat your winter blues away especially as entry is free. The rink which is built around the bandstand is decorated with 1000s of lights and so much festive cheer that you'll leave still humming those memorable Christmas tunes. The rink is the largest open air ice rink in the UK so there is ample room for skating without fear of colliding into fellow skaters.
There are a host of other activities to keep even then "grinch" amongst you distracted. An observation wheel offers views of the park and surrounding areas, the Christmas circus will dazzles you with acts of acrobatics and new this year is the Magical Ice Kingdom where you can observe an ice kingdom of shipwrecks and polar bears.
Set in the grand courtyard of Somerset House is probably the poshest of the outdoor ice rinks. Along with skating there are a hosts of other tempting extras. If you love afternoon tea as much as we do then, Fortnum's Lodge will offer afternoon tea and champagne. We can already imagine indulging in hot chocolate and watching the hours fly away.
